Big Ocean is a K-Pop group making history as the first to feature hearing-impaired members. The group, formed by Hyunjin, Jiseok, and Chanyeon, debuted in April 2024 with the aim of challenging stereotypes and promoting inclusivity in the music industry.
In a short time, Big Ocean has made a significant impact on the K-Pop industry and society at large. Their music has inspired thousands of people around the world, and their message of inclusivity has resonated with people of all ages and backgrounds.
We had the opportunity to interview them and learn a little more about them and their future plans as Big Ocean.
Exclusive interview
Mundo Hallyu: Hi guys, we are very excited to have this opportunity to get to know you a little better. We want to tell you that we admire your work, you are very talented, and we know that you will go far.
1. What inspired you to create Big Ocean?
Hyunjin: I started as a content creator to challenge misconceptions and prejudices about hearing disabilities. When the chance to join this idol project came along, I saw it as a natural extension of my mission to inspire and educate others.
Chanyeon: My motivation came from wanting to share my story with a wider audience through music. Working as an audiologist showed me how powerful storytelling can be, and I wanted to connect with more people and make a positive impact.
Jiseok: I became interested in music through BTS RM’s donation to my school’s music education program. I thought RM’s good deeds were impressive. From that moment, I also wanted to become a musician who has a positive influence like him.
2. What has been the most difficult thing you’ve faced as a group so far?
Hyunjin: Training was really tough, especially sticking to a strict diet. There were moments when we had to resist our cravings and focus on staying healthy and in shape for our performances.
Chanyeon: Learning English and ASL (American Sign Language) was a big challenge for me. It was essential to connect with a broader audience, but it required a lot of dedication and practice.
Jiseok: Synchronizing our performances was quite challenging. We all have different strengths and weaknesses, so it took a lot of effort to achieve the level of coordination needed for our performances.
3. What are your goals for the future as artists or group?
Hyunjin: We hope to bridge the gap between people and overcome stereotypes. Our goal is to be recognized for our talents and performances, regardless of any differences.
Chanyeon: I want to keep growing as an artist, turning «impossible» into «possible.» Continuous improvement and challenging myself are my main goals.
Jiseok: I am to improve my vocal skills and deliver powerful performances. I want to keep growing and show our fans the best of what we can do.
4. How do you feel about having such big fans in Latin America?
We are deeply moved by the overwhelming love and interest you’ve shown us, especially considering we’re just a small rookie group from the other side of the world. Your support reaches us no matter where we go and knowing that we have fans like you gives us immense strength and motivation to keep working hard. We are eternally grateful for your unwavering support.
5. Do you know any Spanish words or phrases?
Hyunjin: ¡Hola, ¿cómo estás? (Hello, how are you?)
Chanyeon: Muchas gracias. (Thank you very much.)
Jiseok: Te amo. (I love you.)
6. What do you enjoy doing in your free time besides music?
Hyunjin: I enjoy playing the piano and listening to music. It’s a great way for me to relax and find inspiration.
Chanyeon: I love drawing and spending time alone. It helps me unwind and clear my mind.
Jiseok: Working out at the gym and visiting different cafes are my favorite activities. I enjoy the physical activity and trying new drinks.
7. What do you enjoy most about being a part of Big Ocean?
We are consistently amazed and deeply humbled by the number of people who recognize and welcome us. While it can feel a bit awkward at times, but it fills us with immense happiness when fans ask for photos or autographs. It’s a wonderful experience that brings us great joy.
8. What is your favorite part of performing live?
Hyunjin: The energy and support from the audience are truly exhilarating. It’s wonderful to feel connected with the crowd and see their reactions.
Chanyeon: Being under the spotlight and feeling like the star of the show is an incredible experience. It makes all our hard work worthwhile.
Jiseok: I love the connection with our fans and the thrilling experience of being on stage. It feels like I’m floating on clouds when I see everyone enjoying our performance.
9. What is your most memorable memory as Big Ocean?
Hyunjin: I vividly remember the exhilarating experience of our debut stage on «Show! Music Core.» The energy and support from everyone were overwhelming, and it was such a dream come true.
Chanyeon: One of the most memorable moments was our first international recognition from the World Health Organization. Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who congratulated us on our debut. It was incredibly inspiring, and it reaffirmed our mission.
Jiseok: Seeing the overwhelming response on social media has been truly heartwarming. We received over a thousand supportive comments, and our accounts gained huge followings. The love and encouragement from fans worldwide have deeply impacted us, and we are incredibly thankful for your support.
10. Could you send a message to your fans who will be reading this interview?
Hyunjin: Thank you so much for your unwavering support and love. Every word of encouragement means the world to us, and we promise to keep working hard to make you proud.
Chanyeon: Your support gives us strength and motivation. We are grateful for each and every one of you, and we look forward to meeting you in person one day.
